Voracines is a boardgame in which you incarnate an evil forest trying to devour all the villagers of a peaceful village.

In this game, you'll need to play with your roots strategically to devour the most villagers and become the most fearful man-eating tree.

Use propagation cards to spread your roots throughout the village by following the 20 patterns of the game. Be the last to surround a tile to capture it. The first to capture 50 victims wins!

GAME DESIGNER

Voracines is a team project I worked on with five other game designers and two artists.

To create the game, we had one constraint: to create a board game based on the theme of “curses.”

We wanted to create a simple but profound game focused on strategy, and all our design choices were geared toward that goal.

After numerous iterations, I am proud to present Voracines!

When creating the game, the biggest challenge we faced was making it as simple as possible so that it would be easier for everyone to understand.

In Voracines, you have to use cards to propel your roots into the village, but this requires orienting them in space, which could be difficult for some people with traditional cards. The solution we found was to create round cards, which are easier to handle and overlap on the board if necessary.

The board itself has been the subject of much thought and consideration in order to make it balanced and enjoyable for 3 to 5 players. We tested many different versions and concluded that the one you see on the left was the best for 3 to 5 players. We are currently testing a smaller version of the board for 2 players (1 vs 1), in order to make the game playable for 2 to 5 players.

The tiles were initially designed so that there would always be 1 house for every 5 victims, and the game graphics were created with this in mind. However, after testing the game several times, we concluded that it was better to distribute the points in circles. For example, all tiles on the outside represent 5 victims, while those in the center represent 15 victims and those in between represent 10 victims.

Finally, we chose wooden sticks for the roots to make them easier to handle, and the colors were chosen from the limited selection offered by the store where we bought them. We thought that even if they looked less like roots, aesthetics were secondary to playability.

PROJECT MARKETER

After receiving the game prototypes, I decided to continue working on the game with two of my friends in order to refine it.
We are continuing to work on the game and are visiting festivals and game bars to playtest and promote Voracines.
In November 2025, I attended the “Le Sens du Jeu” festival in Sens (France). I was there for two days, during which I was able to test the game with families and gather a lot of feedback.

We will also participate in the “Salon Fantastique” festival in Paris and other festivals in 2026.
